Agnes Horizontal Lines was named after the great American minimalist artist Agnes Martin (1912-2004), whose work I saw and was inspired by at the Tate Modern. Martin’s style is discreet and subdued in colour, yet the tones have a powerful and illuminating effect. The imperfect nature of the hand drawn lines gives this pattern a distinct sense of movement within the consistency of the design.

Aztec was inspired by an old archival design I discovered, which I have brought to life with new colours. For me it is reminiscent of traditional Aztec art, while also alluding to a scene of sailing ships. This design works particularly well for upholstery.

Broken Line was inspired by the Op Art movement, most notably its forerunner Bridget Riley (1931- ). Her works are often disorientating on the eye, and in this fabric the broken lines amidst such a consistent design evoke a similarly destabilising effect.

Clea was designed by graphic artist Alexandra Palmowski. The design is inspired by the post-impressionist painter Henri Rousseau (1844-1910), whose works were often created in the primitive manner, depicting scenes of nature in a flat and graphically pared-down style. This is reflected in the forest scene of Clea, in which the trees and foliage are distinctly surreal and yet seem to co-exist happily, giving the design a magical quality. The fabric also embodies Alexandra’s signature style of 60s pop with vibrant graphic colours. The design was made for my niece Clea, who is whimsical yet energetic.

Designed by Rose de Borman, Findhorn Bay is inspired by the beaches of the North East coast of Scotland. It shows a scene of the driftwood and pebbles of a remote beach, which is mainly occupied not by sun seekers but by screams of oystercatchers, curlews, and sandpipers. My family and I often spend days on the beach at Findhorn, and the colour-ways I have created for this fabric reflect the way the light falls across it over the span of the day.

Forest was the first fabric produced for the Virginia White Collection and was designed by Rose de Borman. Designed by Dora, Honor was created from an ancient piece of French lace transposed to the woodblock and from there to the silk screen. Dora is an English designer who gains inspiration from the land and ancient monuments around her in East Sussex, as well as by the colours and faded lithographic style of the English artist Eric Ravilious (1903-1942). Honor is named after my second daughter who is feminine and quirky.

Iona was designed by the brilliant artist Alexander Hamilton, who trained in Italy and specialises in large scale mural design. Iona is based on an ancient Celtic design of woven and platted borders as found in the book of Kells, which was first brought to Britain from the little and mystical island of Iona on the West Coast of Scotland. This island is so special and beautiful that we called our first daughter by its name.

North Sea was designed by Rose de Borman, a London based artist who travels all over the world to collect antique fabrics and who is renowned for her loose painterly style. The inspiration came from C19th engravings of the sea near Hastings as well as the Van Gogh sepia drawings of the sea I saw at the Royal Academy. The name is inspired by the North Sea on the North East coast of Scotland where I spend a lot of time. The colour-ways I have created reflect the way the light falls across the sea over the span of a day.

Ola was designed by Alexandra Palmowski, a graphic artist based in Manchester with a brilliant sense of 3D geometrics. I was attracted to Alexandra’s style which is reminiscent of the Op Art created by the British artist Bridget Riley (1931-), whose geometric patterns have a disorientating effect on the eye and produce movement in colour. Having spent many holidays in a fishing village in Cornwall, the names of the colour-ways get their inspiration from seaside sweet. The name Ola is the Polish version of Alexandra.

Pictish was inspired by the art of the Pict people in Northern and Eastern Scotland during the Iron Age. The design is unique because it retains a Celtic quality whilst also having a distinctly 50s feel to it. For me this makes it particularly great for vintage pieces of furniture.

Reeds was designed by Alexandra Palmowski, a graphic artist based in Manchester with a brilliant sense of 3D geometrics. Inspired by the post-impressionist painter Henri Rousseau (1844-1910), Reeds depicts imaginative forest glades and dense foliage. Having spent a lot of time on the Suffolk coast surrounded by reed beds, I feel that they are a distinct part of the English landscape. Through the use of bold colours, this design is large-scale and depicts an abstracted scene of nature.

Designed by Dora, Rye was inspired by the wood carvings of the English artist Eric Ravilious (1903-1942). The design captures the feeling of something scratched and ancient, yet abstract. Dora creates her designs from Lino and woodcarvings and is constantly looking to the Sussex landscape around her to gain inspiration. The crude base cloth used for this print and its colours gives this design a feeling of rusticity and earthiness.

I was attracted to Alexandra’s style as it is reminiscent of the forerunner of Op Art Bridget Riley (1931-), whose geometric patterns have a disorientating effect on the eye and produce movement in colour. The pointillist style in this design harks back to the French post-Impressionist artist Seurat, with the little dots creating a sense of flux in the most subtle way. The powerful design is toned down by printing it in delicate, mostly pastel tones.

Designed by Dora, Sompting is based on engravings found in the Romanesque church in Sompting on the South coast of England. Victor was designed by Alexandra Palmowski, a graphic artist based in Manchester with a brilliant sense of 3D geometrics. Victor Vasarely was the father of OP Art, a movement which explored geometric patterns with a disorientating effect on the eye and which produce movement in colour. This fabric and paper is an ode to his graphically strong work. It is influenced by the early black and white perspex art Bridget Riley created- seemingly simply but optically powerful with an endless motif like a never-ending maze.

Zig Zag is a design I discovered in an archive, and which I felt is reminiscent of the Op Art movement, which features designs that are disorientating on the eye and produce movement in colour and motif.
