Clea was designed by graphic artist Alexandra Palmowski. The design is inspired by the post-impressionist painter Henri Rousseau (1844-1910), whose works were often created in the primitive manner, depicting scenes of nature in a flat and graphically pared-down style. This is reflected in the forest scene of Clea, in which the trees and foliage are distinctly surreal and yet seem to co-exist happily, giving the design a magical quality. The fabric also embodies Alexandra’s signature style of 60s pop with vibrant, graphic colours. The design was made for my niece Clea, who is whimsical yet energetic.

Designed by Rose de Borman, Findhorn Bay is inspired by the beaches of the North East coast of Scotland. It shows a scene of the driftwood and pebbles of a remote beach, which is mainly occupied not by sun seekers but by screams of oystercatchers, curlews, and sandpipers. My family and I often spend days on the beach at Findhorn, and the colour-ways I have created for this fabric reflect the way the light falls across it over the span of the day.

Forest was the first paper produced for VWC and was designed by Rose de Borman. Rose is an extremely talented London based artist who travels all over the world to collect antique fabrics. The influences of this make this an iconic piece of design as it crosses boarders, resonating with Eastern, Western, modern and ancient arts all fused together. The inspiration was to create a busy forest with bees and creatures, flowers and foliage in a painterly and organic way.

Designed by Dora, Honor was created from an ancient piece of French lace transposed to the woodblock and from there to the silk screen. Dora is an English designer who gains inspiration from the land and ancient monuments around her in east Sussex, as well as by the colours and faded lithographic style of English artist Eric Ravilious (1903-1942). Honor is named after my second daughter who is feminine and quirky.

Iona was designed by the brilliant artist Alexander Hamilton, who trained in Italy and specialises in large scale mural design. Iona is based on an ancient Celtic design of woven and platted borders as found in the book of Kells, which was first brought to Britain from the little and mystical island of Iona on the West Coast of Scotland. This island is so special and beautiful that we called our first daughter by its name.

North Sea was designed by Rose de Borman, a London based artist who travels all over the world to collect antique fabrics and who is renowned for her loose painterly style. The inspiration came from C19th engravings of the sea near Hastings as well as the Van Gogh sepia drawings of the sea I saw at the Royal Academy. The name is inspired by the North Sea on the North East coast of Scotland where I spend a lot of time. The colour-ways I have created reflect the way the light falls across the sea over the span of a day.

Ola was designed by Alexandra Palmowski, a graphic artist based in Manchester with a brilliant sense of 3D geometrics. I was attracted to Alexandra’s style as reminiscent of the forerunner of Op Art Bridget Riley (1931-), whose geometric patterns have a disorientating effect on the eye and produce movement in colour. Having spent many holidays in a fishing village in Cornwall, the names of the colour-ways get their inspiration from seaside sweets, which I felt the design was reminiscent of. The name Ola is the Polish version of Alexandra.

Romilly was designed by Alexandra Palmowski, a graphic artist based in Manchester with a brilliant sense of 3D geometrics. I was attracted to Alexandra’s style as reminiscent of the forerunner of Op Art Bridget Riley (1931-), whose geometric patterns have a disorientating effect on the eye and produce movement in colour. The wide range of colour-ways available for this paper make it one of the most popular designs in the collection.

Designed by Dora, Rye was inspired by the wood carvings of English artist Eric Ravilious (1903-1942). The design captures the feeling of something scratched and ancient, yet abstract. Dora creates her designs from Lino and woodcarvings and is constantly looking to the Sussex landscape around her to gain inspiration. The colours for the wallpapers are delicate and in the palette of Ravillious. They are reminiscent of misty grey English days.

Sofia was designed by Alexandra Palmowski, a graphic artist based in Manchester with a brilliant sense of 3D geometrics. I was attracted to Alexandra’s style as reminiscent of the forerunner of Op Art Bridget Riley (1931-), whose geometric patterns have a disorientating effect on the eye and produce movement in colour. The pointillist style in this design harks back to the French post-Impressionist artist Seurat, with the little dots creating a sense of flux in the most subtle way. The powerful design is toned down by printing it in delicate, mostly pastel tones.

Designed by Dora, Sompting is based on engravings found in the Romaneque church in Sompting on the South coast of England. It also finds its inspiration in the designs and murals of Eric Ravilious. Pared down, scratched and with an antique feel, this design is utterly English.

Inspired by Tudor striped tents used by English Longbowman. Their Pavilions were often decorated with woven, striped cloth which can be seen in the painting The Field of the Cloth of Gold (where Henry VIII met Francis I of France).
I came across the idea when decorating a boys bedroom with a steep pitched roof and beams and I felt this simple design would create the feeling of camping.
The design is simple but extremely effective and I felt it would compliment many of the more decorative patterns within the Collection.
It is possible to specify the stipe to match the rest of the fabrics and decor in a scheme and is printed to order.

Victor was designed by Alexandra Palmowski, a graphic artist based in Manchester with a brilliant sense of 3D geometrics. Victor Vasarely was the father of British OP Art, a movement which explored geometric patterns with a disorientating effect on the eye and which produce movement in colour. This paper is an ode to his graphically strong work. It is influenced by the early black and white perspex art Bridget Riley created- seemingly simply but optically powerful with an endless motif like a never-ending maze. The pale tones we have selected for this design make it easy on the eye for a wallpaper.

This design was Alexandra Palmowski’s graduation piece from the Royal College of Art. I was drawn to it because of its allusion to the wonderful Matisse cut-outs. It is powerful and simple, juxtaposing a strong graphic design with the natural element of the sea.
